Kevin T. Miller D.O.

President
Practices at High Lakes Health Care in Bend, Oregon. Kevin is a current board member and President of the Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons of Oregon. He also served as the president of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians of Oregon. Kevin also serves on the Governor's Board of Rural Health

Dr. Miller’s special interest in diabetes began when his wife of 6 months developed type 1 diabetes during both of their medical training. Having a background in exercise science, this medical crisis has turned into a blessing for his family and an opportunity for positively impacting this chronic disease in his patients.

Dr. Kevin Miller was born at Eglan Air force Base in Florida, and spent his younger years on several bases throughout the Midwest and Eastern coast. He graduated from Oral Roberts University in 1991 with a degree in Health and Exercise Science. He then attended Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine where he completed his medical training in 1995, as well as an additional year fellowship in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine. Dr. Miller continued on with an internship at Genesys Health Systems in Grand Blanc, Michigan, and a Family Medicine Residency at University of Ohio, Cuyahoga Falls Hospital. He then moved with his wife to Portland, Oregon, were he practiced with Adventist Health Systems, eventually relocating to his current practice of 8 years at High Lakes Health Care in Bend, Oregon.

Dr. Miller is the current president of the Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons of Oregon. He also serves on the Governor's Board of Rural Health. He is actively involved in health care reform in his state, and is supports the COMP Northwest’s new medical school in Lebanon, Oregon.

In his practice he emphasizes preventative medicine, and encourages healthy lifestyle to prevent disease. He sub -specializes in the treatment of lipids and cardiovascular risk reduction. Like his partners, Dr Miller inspires even the youngest generation to “break the cycle of poor health.”

Dr Miller lectures to healthcare professionals on the treatment of lipids, and challenging providers’ to improve their health and wellness, thus impacting their patient care. Dr. Miller believes the DIME Program® is exactly what healthcare providers need to positively impact the management of this chronic disease.

Dr. Miller's hobbies include hiking, swimming, playing with his girls, and listening to a good history book on CD.

Richard B. Aguilar M.D.

Medical Director
Has been in private practice for over 20 years. He is a Board Certified Internist and is the Director of Diabetes Care at High Lakes Health Care in Bend, OR. He is a Professional Member of the ADA and a member of the American College of Physicians. Dr. Aguilar is a national lecturer on the diagnosis and management of diabetes mellitus and has given over 100 Continuing Medical Education presentations on this subject. His passion in medicine is the education and preventative management of the complications from diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Dr. Richard Aguilar received his MD degree from the University of California Irvine-California College of Medicine in Irvine, California. He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of California Irvine Medical Center and the Long Beach Veterans Administration Medical Center, respectively. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine and a member of the American College of Physicians and the American Society of Internal Medicine. He is also a current member of the American Diabetes Association. Dr. Aguilar has been in private practice (general Internal Medicine) in the Los Angeles area since 1988.

Throughout his career, Dr. Aguilar has held numerous positions including the Chief of Medicine and Chief of ICU at various hospitals and has chaired numerous hospital committees. Dr. Aguilar has been lecturing on the diagnosis and management of diabetes mellitus and hypertension for more than 16 years and has been a guest speaker in over forty states across America. Dr. Aguilar has been invited to teach internationally and regularly presents before hospital Grand Rounds and CME programs. He has given Public Service Announcements in Spanish both on radio and television for the National Stroke Association across the United States.

In 2003, he was asked to sit on an Advisory Board to the American Diabetes Association. For the next three years he assisted in the development of Continuing Medical Education material for the Latino Health Care Provider. In 2006, Dr. Aguilar was named the Director of Diabetes Care for High Lakes Health Care in Bend, Oregon. As its director, Dr. Aguilar provides the central network of diabetes prevention, treatment and education for many patients at High Lakes Health Care. While working closely with all of their providers, HLHC has developed a reputation of excellence in diabetes management. By the first quarter of 2008, under the direction of Dr. Aguilar, HLHC helped over 60% of their patients with diabetes reach the HgA1C target set by the American Diabetes Association thereby helping each one of these patients reduce the risk of complications from diabetes. Dr. Aguilar also continues to practice primary care internal medicine in his offices in Downey and Huntington Park, California within predominantly Hispanic communities.

Dr. Aguilar is one of the lead authors of the recent Abstract accepted for publication by the ADA in 2009. The Abstract reviews the data compiled by Diabetes Nation of over 1,000 diabetic patients seen at High Lakes Health Care involving a three year retrospective chart review of care involving the DIME Program™ Care Model.

Dr. Aguilar believes that the management of diabetes begins with a close and open relationship with his patients. This relationship allows him to explain the “Simplicity of Diabetes”, in a personal one-on-one approach. His passion continues to be the education and preventative management of the complications from diabetes and the love for his family.

In 2009, Dr. Aguilar was recognized by the American Diabetes Association for achieving the Diabetes Physicians Recognition Award. The designed of this award is to recognize physicians who use evidence-based measures and provide excellent care to their patients with diabetes using standards set by The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). The NCQA is an independent 501(c) (3) non-profit organization in the United States and has been a central figure in driving improvement throughout the health care system, helping to elevate the issue of health care quality to the top of the national agenda.

Eden M. Miller D.O.

Co-Medical Director
Hractices with High Lakes Health Care in Bend, Oregon. Her practice is family oriented with a subspecialty in diabetes care. Eden is also a national lecturer for diabetes treatment and prevention, serves on several diabetes advisory boards, and is herself a Type 1 diabetic.

Eden has a passion for diabetes that she blends with her formal training as a primary care physician. In 1998 during medical school, she developed type 1 diabetes. Continuing her training, she was determined to merge her personal experiences with her primary care background.

Dr. Eden Miller is an Osteopathic board certified Family Practitioner who received her medical degree in 1997 from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Missouri. Returning to the Pacific Northwest, she completed her residency in Family Practice at Eastmoreland Hospital in Portland, Oregon. Upon completion of her residency she joined High Lakes Healthcare in Bend, Oregon, where she shares a practice with her husband Dr. Kevin Miller.

Out of her personal experiences, Dr. Miller works as a diabetologist as well as a family practitioner in Central Oregon. An impassioned speaker, Dr. Miller has given over 500 lectures in the field of diabetes to health care providers and patients alike, on subjects such as Primary Care Diabetes Management, Insulin Pump Therapy, Clinical Research, and Healthcare Policy. In addition, she serves on several advisory boards, and has written editorial articles for publication.

Dr. Miller believes that a physiologic patient individualized approach to diabetes intervention is critical for success. She feels if our nation is to triumph over the ravages of diabetes, a collaborative effort; unhindered by fear of personal scrutiny, and barriers to effective treatment need to be removed. For her, Diabetes Nation provides the foundational model to impact the people that represent this disease, and begin the process of restoring hope back to their lives. Dr. Miller believes her success starts by “turning her patients into experts on their own disease”.

Married to “The other Dr. Miller,” the two of them enjoy raising their girls in the beautiful Cascade Mountains; hiking, biking, snowboarding, and motorcycling.
